Saunas, or banyas, are an important part of Ukrainian culture and have been used for centuries for relaxation, cleansing, and healing. Ukrainian banyas typically use wood-burning stoves to heat up rocks, which are then used to create steam. Banyas are often followed by a plunge into a nearby lake or snowdrift, which is believed to have health benefits. In addition to being a form of physical relaxation, banyas are also seen as a social activity, and are often accompanied by food, drink, and music.
